What are Layers?

Layers in Nekt provide a strategic way to organize your tables, ensuring your data is structured and accessible for your team. In the platform, you’ll see this division clearly in the Catalog.

When your catalog is initialized, it includes three default layers: Raw, Trusted, and Service. These layers form the foundation of your workspace.

  • On the Starter plan, these layers are fixed.
  • On the Growth plan, you can create additional layers and even rename existing ones, giving you flexibility to adapt your data structure as your organization scales.

Default Layers explained

Raw Layer

The Raw Layer in Nekt represents data that has already undergone an initial transformation to apply Delta tables. Data first enters the platform through the Extraction Layer, where it is captured in its original format. Nekt then automatically applies Delta tables to this extracted data, preparing it for storage and further processing in the Raw Layer.

  • Purpose: Provide a structured yet comprehensive repository of data in Delta table format.
  • Key Benefits: Enables efficient querying, and maintains auditability while preserving the integrity of the original source data.

Trusted Layer

The Trusted Layer is where users can refine, standardize, and consolidate data from the Raw Layer based on their specific needs. While the Raw Layer provides Delta-based data as a structured starting point, the Trusted Layer empowers users to apply their own transformations, such as validation, cleansing, deduplication, and consolidations. This ensures the data aligns with organizational requirements and is ready for operational and analytical use.

  • Purpose: Provide a flexible environment for users to transform, standardize, and consolidate data from the Raw Layer into a trusted and reliable format.
